The Marystown-Burin Area Chamber of Commerce released the following on behalf of its members:
PRESS RELEASE
This is the season for wish lists. It is the sincerest wish of the Marystown-Burin Area Chamber of Commerce that everyone have a joyous and peaceful holiday, and that the coming year be happy and prosperous.
This is also a time of economic and political turmoil. In the short term, it is quite possible that governments will respond to the economic downturn with the implementation of infrastructure projects. As the voice for business on the Burin Peninsula, we have a wish list for that too. If such infrastructure projects are to be funded, we ask the decision makers to be put as a priority those projects that will not only provide meaningful work for the unemployed, but will also leave an enduring legacy that will enhance the economic potential and help diversify the economy in our region. A strong and diverse economy is, after all, good business.
We are all aware of several project ideas that have been conceived, studied, and in some cases planned. These have not happened because funding has not been available. Some, such as a graving dock at Cow Head, will mainly allow a single large employer to provide steady, relaible work for years to come. Others, such as a marine industrial park or a road link to the aquaculture industry in Bay D'Espoir, will provide the routes and infrastructure for new busineses to become established in our region. Still others, such as expansion to the Winterland airport or the development of an arts centre or recreational complex, will benefit all our residents, yet make doing business less costly and make it easier to attract new employees to our region.
This list is not exhaustive, and is certainly not intended to imply priority. The Chamber does ask, however, that these projects, and ones like them, be recognized for what they are. They will not only provide work while they are happening; they will provide an opportunity for businesses to grow, and therefore for employment to continue and to increase long after the infrastructure has ended. Projects that stabalize sectors such as the fishing industry and allow our businesses - small and large - to grow will have effects many times larger than the value of the funds spent to accomplish them. In addition to wishing everyone the best of the season, we would especialy like to wish those whose responsibility it is to make decisions about infrastructure projects a rejuvenating holiday and a new year filled with both wisdom and patience. The Chamber recognizes that theirs is not an easy task, and, as the voice of business on the Burin Peninsula, we are ready and willing to work cooperatively to maximize the economic effect of any infrastructure projects that may evolve in our region.

The Marystown Burin Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome back the Tidy Towns Newfoundland and Labrador judges (Charles Collier & Harry MacDonald), who will be in the area on July 2nd, 2008 with judging commencing at 10 a.m. The MBACC encourages business owners and residents of the area to take pride in our community and help clean up! Simple things such as mowing the grass, picking up litter and general maintenance can make a tremendous difference to curb appeal. PLANT PRIDE, NOT LITTER!

It is with great pleasure that we, The Marystown Burin Area Chamber of Commerce, award Tom Baker with our Honourary Membership Award. This is the second time in our over-20-year history that such a distinction has been passed on to an individual by the MBACC.
Tom has been instrumental in the MBACC since its inception and has held almost every board position and served on most committees. One of the most noticeable examples of Tom’s efforts is with the Community Pride initiative. Many people were involved in this committee over the years but Tom was always the driving force behind its success.
To volunteer one’s time to be part of the Chamber Board, and additional time on various committees is rare. It takes sacrifice, time, effort, and a genuine willingness to give of oneself to the betterment of others. Tom Baker is a shining example of this type of individual.
Tom has also been involved with other organizations in the community. This included volunteer positions with CBDC, Kinsmen, NL Housing and numerous other fundraising initiatives.
Please join us in congratulating Tom on this achievement.
